Some phrases stay with us for years: “You’ve always been like that.” “You’ll never amount to anything.” “After what you’ve done…” God’s Word answers with a powerful truth—and that truth applies to you today.
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
New—Not Improved, but Created New
Paul does not say that whoever is in Christ has improved a little. He says he is a new creature—a new creation. When you received Jesus, you were born again (see John 3:3). Your innermost being, your spirit, is completely new. The old has not been painted over—it has passed away.
God has not only freed you from your guilt. He has made you righteous. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (see 2 Corinthians 5:21). That is your identity: loved, accepted, righteous before God—not because of your performance, but because of what Jesus has done.
Believe What God Says About You
This truth is true before you feel it. Feelings and old thoughts will speak up. That is why you renew your mind with God’s Word (see Romans 12:2). You don’t go by what you feel or what others say about you, but by what God says about you.
When the old voice comes to condemn you, give it no room. Answer with the Word: “That is passed away. I am in Christ. I am a new creation. I am the righteousness of God in Christ.” There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus (see Romans 8:1).
The more you believe and speak your new identity, the more visible it becomes—in your thoughts, words and actions. You are not living toward something. You are living from what God has already accomplished in you.
Faith in Action
- Write 2 Corinthians 5:17 on a note and read it aloud every morning.
- Confess: “I am a new creation. I am the righteousness of God in Christ.”
- When an old statement about yourself comes up, replace it immediately with what God says.
